Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866 to a wealthy family. she was an independent minded , with a passion for drawing plants and animals. These in time became books, the famous Peter Rabbit books, which were first published by Frederick Warne and co in 1902. The character of Peter Rabbit was patented, and a was produced in 1903. This was an astute move, and is probably the first time that licensed characters had been produced commercially. by 1905 Beatrix Potter had earned enough from her books to purchase Hill top farm at Sawrey, in England's Lake District, now part of the county of Cumbria.

In 1923, at the age of 47, Beatrix Potter married local Lake District solicitor William Heelis. The new Mrs Heelis used her increasing wealth to purchase more farms, and was instrumental in encouraging the farmers to preserve the local Lake District native sheep, the Herdwick. Always known locally as Mrs Heelis, she was a popular figure in the area around Windermere, Ambleside and Sawrey. I live in the Lake District,at White Moss House near Grasmere, about 8 miles from Beatrix Potter's House, Hill top. I know people ( now very elderly)who met Mrs Heelis when they were children. even before I moved to the Lake District in 1981 I loved all the Beatrix Potter stories. I could recite Peter Rabbit by heart, and as I read the stories to my own children, I think they could also remember- once upon a time there were four little rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter These are the famous opening lines of the tale of Peter Rabbit. I was given this book as a Christening gift, and I also received a Peter Rabbit mug as a Christening gift. I still have the mug and book all these years later. my own children were also given Peter Rabbit Christening gifts, which have also survived until now. These included a money box and a Christening set of mug, bowl and plate. All the Peter Rabbit china gifts were made by Wedgwood, and were top quality and lasted really well in top condition.
